Montembeault was a part of a "sign-and-trade" transaction between the two teams. Monty re-signed as a UFA with the Blues and was promptly traded to the Royals. This meant that he could participate in offseason training and player development. Blues backup Joel Blomqvist, and recent draftee Jamie Langenbrunner were also part of the contingent coming back to the Royals. To complete the tandem swap, the Royals moved Igor Shesterkin to the Blues. The veteran netminder became a cap casualty in the deal and wouldn't support a relegated role as a backup in Riverview.
