At his end-of-season press conference, GM Nagle outlined the path moving forward. With 12 free agents coming due with contracts after next season, there were serious questions around how the Royals intend on icing a roster moving forward. Rumors had been swirling that the team would deal as many UFA players away as rentals, and simply let the rest of the group go to market. A risky proposition for any team, but GM Nagle clarified what they intend on doing next season.
"Our plan is to resign all five of our RFAs during the season and build around that solid core of 27 and 28 year-olds. We can't expect to develop young players without talented veteran guys around to show them the ropes. Now our draft pick capital is strong enough that we can establish a good growth system moving forward. Expecting to get more draft picks would put us into a spot where specific player development would be a challenge. This has been a retool and not a complete rebuild. There's simply no appetite for a 'scorched earth' rebuild." said GM Nagle.
